Instructional objectives

  • To understand different nutrients and its importance.
  • Understanding sun - as the ultimate source of energy.
  • To understand difference between autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition.
  • Understanding the process of photosynthesis.
  • Understanding parasitic nutrition, saprophytic nutrition , symbiosis and insectivorous plants.

Teaching process

  • Start the class by discussing the importance of the food that we eat. Recalling different nutrients, importance of nutrition, what we obtain our food from and what are the components of the food that we eat.
  • Discussing the idea of food making process by green plants (photosynthesis - autotrophic nutrition) and how we feed ourselves (heterotrophic nutrition).
  • Asking whether all plants are autotrophic?, it is easy to make them realise that some are exceptions such as mushrooms, lichens etc whose modes of nutrition are heterotrophic such as saprophytic and symbiosis respectively.
  • Introduce other types of heterotrophic nutrition also. (parasitism,insectivorous plants.)

Activities

  • Understanding that sunlight is necessary for the photosynthesis. (Textbook activity no.1)
  • Iodine test to check the presence of carbohydrate.
  • Observing under microscope - xylem, phloem, stomata etc.
