Instructional objectives

  • Need for measurements.
  • Differentiate basic physical quantities and Derived physical quantities
  • Need for expressing physical quantities with their respective units.
  • Concept of least count.
  • Vectors and scalar quantities.
  • Meaning of prefixes like kilo, centi, milli, micro, nano
  • Use of slide calipers and screw gauge for measurement.(lab activities)

Teaching process

  • Talk about need for measurement. How do you quantify various physical quantities and need for units of measurement.
  • Need for accuracy of measurements and introduce least count.
  • Students to be given different instruments to find least counts of the same.
  • Physical quantities to be differentiated as fundamental and derived. Appreciate significance of derived physical quantities
  • To introduce vector and scalar quantities and elaborate on the significance of both magnitude and direction.
  • Talk about limitations of basic instruments (like a scale) and importance of accuracy.
  • Introduce Slide calipers and screw gauge.
  • Students to calculate the least count of the above .
  • To enable students to use the above to find diameter(both external and internal) of a wire, pipe etc.


  • worksheets to be provided to solve numerical problems concerning screw gauge. ( Shall be enclosed as and when prepared).
  • Test shall be planned by the end of the month for evaluation.

Special needs modification.

  • Suggest youtube videos on measurements.
  • Modified worksheets to be given.
